What is RoHS Certificate?


The abbreviation RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. The RoHS application covers all electrical and electronic products. The basis of this practice is the directive 2002 / 95 / EC published in the European Union countries.

RoHS Certificate

This regulation was issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in our country under the name of Regulation on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment in 2008. However, it is briefly referred to as the EEE Regulation.

The RoHS directive is a directive that restricts the use of certain harmful substances in electronic cards and materials. For example, the use of elements such as lead, mercury, cadmium and some brominated compounds in electrical and electronic products is restricted. They harm both human health and the environment in case of waste.

Since the beginning of this application, all products to be offered to the European Union markets must pass RoHS compliance. The scope of this application was expanded over time and RoHS2011 in 2 and RoHS2015 in 3 were published.

Companies and distributors who send electrical or electronic products, equipment, subassemblies, cables, components or spare parts to European Union countries must apply RoHS restrictions.

The substances covered by RoHS are: Lead (highest 1000 ppm), Mercury (highest 100 ppm), Cadmium (highest 100 ppm), plus 6 valued Chromium (highest 1000 ppm), Polybromide biphenyl (highest 1000 ppm) and Polybromide biphenyl ether (highest 1000 ppm).

In later updates, the following substances were added to the RoHS scope: Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (highest 1000 ppm), Butyl benzyl phthalate (highest 1000 ppm), Dibutyl phthalate (highest 1000 ppm) and Diisobutyl phthalate (highest 1000 ppm) ppm).

What Benefits Does RoHS Certificate Provide to Businesses?

Why is RoHS Certificate Important?

Therefore, in order to protect people and the natural environment against the risks of toxic waste, RoHS is applied in more than 30 countries.

Hazardous substances covered by RoHS are found in many consumer electronics today. For example, lead is used in power cables, USB charging cables, and soldering. Bullets are also used in television screens, cameras, printed circuit boards and batteries. Cadmium is used in some photocells, semiconductors, cables and batteries. In order for a company to obtain RoHS Certificate, the amount of lead to be found in the products should be lower than 1000 ppm and the amount of cadmium should be lower than 100 ppm.

Such mercury, switches and relays, plus 6 valued chrome, paints, toners and anticorrosive materials, polybromide biphenyl and polybromide biphenyl ether is used in plastic connectors and enclosures, cables and condensers.

More than one million consumer electronic waste is generated annually. Every year in the US, 300 is a million computer waste. It is estimated that only mobile phones have around 30 million waste per year and that 100 produces over one thousand tons of waste. All these figures reveal the danger to the environment. Therefore, it is obvious how important RoHS implementation is. All electrical and electronic products must comply with RoHS. The production of the companies that do not comply with the RoHS principles will result in the failure of these products to be placed on the market.

Since the beginning of the century, the use of chemicals in the products has increased considerably. In the beginning, their benefits were prioritized and the harmful effects of these chemicals were not widely understood. However, if asbestos is processed in powder form in an electrical equipment, it is a highly dangerous carcinogenic substance when inhaled later. Hundreds of thousands of people have suffered from lung cancer and other serious illnesses due to asbestos use, and their health has deteriorated. That is why the RoHS directive 2003 / 2002 / EC, published in 95 in the European Union countries, was created and prevented the use of certain harmful substances in electrical and electronic products.

If products that do not comply with RoHS are offered to consumers in European Union countries, companies producing and marketing these products are prosecuted and financial penalties are applied.
