G Certificate

What is G Certificate?

The application of the G mark is a mandatory practice in the introduction of construction materials that are not subject to the CE marking in our country. The G mark is generally affixed to materials, labels attached to the material, packaging of the material or commercial documentation of the material.

G Certificate

The application of G mark is based on two legal regulations. The first is the Regulation on the Criteria for Construction Materials issued by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization in 2009, which regulates the G-related principles. This regulation is briefly referred to as the G-Mark Regulation.

The other legal regulation is the Communiqué on the Implementation of the Compliance Confirmation Systems in accordance with the Regulation on the Criteria for Construction Materials published in 2010, which explains the principles of implementation of the said regulation. This communiqué is also referred to as G Application Communiqué.

The construction materials subject to G-mark application are described in these regulations as follows:

  • Permanent materials for building and other civil engineering works, and

  • Materials not subject to CE marking

Among the many building materials included in these definitions, the most prominent ones are ready-mixed concrete and rebar (side, concrete steel bars).

When placing the G-mark on such building materials, the performance values of the products are determined by conformity assessment to the national standards to which they are subject, or to a national technical approval if there is no standard.

Evaluation studies to be carried out in accordance with the national standard are carried out by the Conformity Assessment Bodies assigned by the Ministry on the relevant product basis and G Certificate of Conformity is issued. The ready-mixed concrete used in the construction industry today cannot be placed on the market without the G mark. The only mandatory certificate for ready-mixed concrete companies is G Certificate.

89 / 106 / EEC Building Materials Directive in European Union countries was published in 1988. In 1993, the directive 93 / 68 / EEC and in 2003 1882 / 2003 / EC, the directive was updated. This directive is intended for the harmonization of any construction material subject to statutory controls for the purpose of CE marking. With this directive, different national regulations preventing the movement of building materials in the European Union countries have been abolished. Factors such as building safety and durability, energy saving, health and environmental protection were also covered. This directive has been taken as basis in the preparation of the Regulation on Construction Materials in our country.

What is the benefit of G Certificate?

G marking on building materials not covered by CE and obtaining a G Certificate has numerous benefits for businesses. First of all, products can be offered to consumers without any legal obstacles and sanctions. The G mark on the products indicates that these products meet the basic requirements for safety and health.

In this way, products bearing the G-mark are considered safer for consumers and there is a drop in claims and liability cases. On the other hand, production costs of enterprises decrease. This naturally increases the efficiency of companies, increases their market share and causes them to gain competitive power. At the same time, G-marked products make it easier for companies to obtain the necessary official authorization and authorization certificates.

Why is G Certificate Important?

The G marking application is primarily applied to building materials that do not have harmonized technical specifications. In this way, G-marked building materials are accepted as safe products for consumers. As with the CE marking system, the G mark can also be placed directly on the building material. Or, a label G attached to the building material can also be affixed. On the other hand, the G mark may be affixed on the packaging of building materials or on the relevant commercial documents.

When marking G on construction materials, performance values that describe the properties of this material should also be added.

There should be no G mark or CE mark on a building material at the same time. If a harmonized standard is subsequently published on a construction material with a G-mark on it, the material will be subject to CE marking.

Technical approval is required for building materials that do not have a harmonized or national standard and do not meet one of the published standards. However, following this approval, the G mark may be placed on the building material. This approval indicates that the material meets the basic requirements depending on the intended use.

Today, in our country, the following standards issued by the Turkish Institute of Standards (TSE) for the placement of the G mark on building materials are considered:

  • TS EN 206: 2013 Concrete - Specification, performance, manufacturing and conformity

  • TS 13515 Complementary standard for the implementation of TS EN 206

These standards are to be applied in regions with different climatic and geographical conditions and at different levels of protection.

In order to be able to offer these products to the market and to avoid any problems, the companies producing construction materials must provide the following documents: G Certificate, G Conformity Certificate and G Declaration of Conformity.

Conclusion

Building materials with G-mark on them are produced according to national and international standards and can be offered to the market means quality. The manufacturers declare that they have fulfilled all the necessary requirements if they have affixed the G mark on their products. In this way, the sale of these building materials without any obstacles in our country is guaranteed.

The application of the G mark is a national practice and the G mark must also be placed on construction materials brought from outside the country. The G mark does not provide an explanation of where construction materials are produced, but provides assurance that they are subject to evaluation before being presented to consumers, manufactured in accordance with legal requirements and meet national and international criteria.

In the application of G mark, a conformity assessment process is carried out by the manufacturer before the construction materials are placed on the market and verification is carried out by an independent and impartial certification or audit institution authorized by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. For this reason, it is mandatory for manufacturers to be aware of the conformity of the construction materials that they plan to offer to the market with legal regulations and related standards. At this stage, the products go through a series of tests and inspections, inspections are performed and a technical file is prepared. After all these works are completed, the manufacturer can put the G mark on the products.

Producer companies have to keep their technical files and test and inspection reports for official inspections. These are the first documents to be looked at when a problem occurs.

The important point here is that not all construction materials are subject to G-marking. This application is only for building materials not covered by the CE marking application. Both the sanitary fittings, wooden doors and similar products used directly by the consumers and the PVC pipes, structural steels and similar products used by the contractors are applied G marking.
