What is E-Mark Certificate?

In practice, E-Mark and e-Mark certification systems are in fact no different. E-Mark certification is based on the regulations issued by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, while e-Mark certification is based on directives issued by the European Union.

E-Mark Certificate

In fact, the basis of both applications is whether the system, parts, components and separate technical components of the motor vehicles comply with the relevant regulatory requirements. In short, both certification systems have similar characteristics and have the same meaning and approach.

In the European Union countries, it is compulsory to obtain an e-Mark Certificate in order to introduce motor vehicle systems, parts, components and separate technical components to the market. E-Mark Certificate is not required. This document proves that the manufacturers of these products meet the basic requirements in terms of traffic safety and environmental protection.

In Turkey, the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology has issued the Type Approval Regulation (661 / 2009 / AT) on the General Safety of Motor Vehicles and Trailers, Systems, Components and Separate Technical Units Designed for These. This regulation is based on the 2009 / 661 / EU directive published in the European Union countries in 2009. This directive describes the general safety requirements for motor vehicles, type approval requirements for trailers and systems and their individual technical components. The said regulation published in our country also aims to ensure compliance with highways and traffic safety during the production and use of motor vehicles and to protect human health and the natural environment. The regulation regulates the type approval requirements for the safety of parts, components, systems and separate technical components produced for motor vehicles and their trailers.

Products marked e-Mark have unlimited access in the European Union and can be offered to consumers without additional testing, evaluation or other conformity markings. In addition, an e-Mark is considered valid in other countries outside Europe, as it models European Union compliance requirements.

The desire for globally harmonized needs has led to the development of two different regulations in Europe. The first of these was developed by the European Commission with the aim of having a common arrangement for all European Union countries. Vehicles assessed and approved according to the European Union directives are marked with a small letter “e.. The other was created by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. However, this regulation is globally applicable. Vehicles certified according to United Nations legal regulations are marked with an uppercase letter ”E..

The manufacturers therefore had to choose between these two regulations over the years. In some cases, manufacturers were asked to have both documents. The European Commission has then simplified its vehicle approvals by adopting its own regulations to the United Nations regulations.

In the meantime, all other machines that do not comply with the definition of vehicles or tractors in the type approval regulations must comply with the CE-marked New Approach directives. These include agricultural equipment, construction machinery, forklift trucks and earthmoving vehicles.

What Benefits Does E-Mark Certificate Provide to Businesses?

E-mark and e-Mark certification work mainly focus on two main benefits:

  • When producing and operating motor vehicles, they must be fully compatible with the structure of the highways and comply with traffic safety.

  • In addition, it should not harm human health and natural environment during use.

In this regard, it is important that the manufacturers have these certificates in order to prove their production quality and purpose. In fact, without this document, it is not possible to market products to European Union countries and other foreign countries, companies must comply with these practices.

The annexes to these regulations include the product groups covered by the certification. For example, 01 High beam or dipped beam headlamps, 03 Motor vehicle reflectors, 04 Motor vehicles and their trailer's backplate illumination, 06 Motor vehicles and their trailers signal lights, 08 Collision against 10 protection is coded as 12 Vehicle brakes.

Likewise 14 Seat belt anchors, 16 Seat belts, anchor systems, child restraint systems, 17 Seats, mounts and head restraints, 19 front fog lights of motor vehicles, 28 Audible warning devices, 34 Fire hazard prevention, 38 Motor vehicles and trailers lamps, 43 safety windows, child restraint systems on 44 motor vehicles and the 79 steering system.

Why is E-Mark Certificate Important?

In E-Mark and e-Mark certification systems whose general structures are very similar, the signs to be placed on these documents are very close to each other. The only difference is the use of lowercase letter “e inde in European Union directives and uppercase letter“ E Birleşmiş in United Nations regulations. Namely,

  • According to the European Union directives, the certification codes of the countries are e1 Germany, e2 France, e3 Italy, e4 Netherlands and e5 Sweden.

  • UN certification according to the codes of the countries of the European Economic Commission regulations, E1 Germany, E2 France, Italy E3, E37 Turkey, and Japan is in the form E43 E47 South Africa.

In other words, the e3 mark on certain product groups indicates that this product is of Italian origin and holds the e-Mark certificate within the framework of the European Union directives. The sign on the product E37 of this product originating in Turkey and that the United Nations represents that it has the E-mark certificate within legal regulations.

Generally, when coding, a definition similar to R44-04 is made. For example, this coding on an automobile safety seat is understood to have been produced in accordance with the basic safety requirements in accordance with the European Union safety standard. The last two digits are the version number of the standard.

While making these codes, the quality management system of the manufacturing companies is controlled and the products are subjected to the necessary special tests. Type approval can be given for all or parts of the vehicle. The approval of a vehicle is based on the approval of the individual components. Type approvals are issued by road transport authorities. However, the tests and controls to be applied are required by the competent authorities.

The main product groups currently covered by the e-Mark application are: trailers, lamps, headlamps, braking systems, seat belts, vehicle locks, vehicle seats, child safety belts and seats, reflectors, front fog lamps, head restraints, collision protection systems and front and rear impact tests.
