Plant Based Certification

Plant-based certification has become an increasingly expanding market today. Because the number of conscious consumers who are looking for a diet that is healthier, has a lower environmental impact or has more ethical sources is increasing day by day.

Plant Based Certification

Consumers no longer trust labels stating “does not contain” on the product, so brand owners must establish trust. Manufacturers need reliable systems and processes that provide greater transparency and reduce cross-contamination. As a result, the demand for globally recognized certification is increasing.

Today there are leading global certification bodies that develop and deliver independent industry and science-based programs that provide trust, confidence and assurance. In general, these programs are based on a facility-based certification program and a comprehensive management system approach and provide a framework for manufacturers to manage these plant-based food production programs. Such practices include operational criteria that must be applied to ensure that plant-based products do not contain material of animal origin.

Plant-based certification has emerged in response to the shift in consumer purchasing behavior that has resulted in an ever-increasing demand for plant-based products. The industry has faced a number of challenges in meeting consumer demands while maintaining brand reputation and mitigating risks. The standards developed for this purpose have strengthened the industry and provided certainty for consumers.

The developed standards are based on a comprehensive management system approach and provide a framework to assist producers in the production of plant-based food. These standards contain operational criteria that must be in place to ensure that plant-based products do not contain raw materials of animal origin.

In fact, even conscious consumers may unknowingly consume animal products or ingredients due to the difficulty of accurately identifying animal ingredients by relying solely on product label information. The trademark on plant-based packaging enables consumers to make informed choices quickly and easily. Such labels will allow brands and products to differentiate themselves.

Essentially, the plant-based global standard is based solely on the control of animal inputs in the production, processing and packaging of plant-based products and its scope includes:

Processed foods (produced or supplied by the company itself)

Ingredients used by food service companies, katring companies and food manufacturers

pet foods

natural health products

Today, many people (e.g., 83 percent of Americans) are adding more plant-based foods to their diets to improve their health and nutrition. More than half of these people do this for weight management. Plant-based food sales increased by 2017 percent from 2018 to 20, outpacing all food sectors. This rate is expected to increase further as more innovative plant-based foods, such as plant-based yoghurt, cheese and meat alternatives, enter the market.

For consumers who are concerned about their health or the environment and are looking for plant-based alternatives, documentation identifying verified plant-based foods is needed. Plant-based certification systems developed for this purpose aim to verify plant-based alternatives to foods of animal origin. Such products include but are not limited to:

Tofu (a typical food made with soy in Far Eastern countries) and tempeh (a cake-like food made from cooked and slightly fermented soybeans)

Meat alternatives to beef, pork, chicken and fish

Dairy alternatives (dairy-free almond, soy, coconut, oats, and the like)

egg substitutes

Cheese, yogurt, butter, and other dairy alternatives to ice cream

In fact, plant-based certification provides the same animal product-free assurance as the vegan label, but only applies to food products. In contrast, the vegan label also applies to non-food products. In general, plant-based certification limits the amount of non-plant ingredients to 5 percent.

More and more products are now certified as plant-based. Labels with this meaning guarantee that the product is original and has been independently verified. Because certified plant-based foods are independently verified and must pass review before this label can be used.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides plant-based certification services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
