Why is ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Important?

While the ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard was designed, OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard, international labor standards published by the International Labor Organization (ILO), other international standards and local standards were taken into consideration.

The abbreviation OHSAS comes from the English Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. The OHSAS 18001 standard has been published by the British Standards Institute and is the most comprehensive certification applied to occupational health and safety to date. With this standard, hazards and risks related to employee health and work safety are identified, evaluated and the necessary measures are taken to minimize the risks. This standard also complies with the legal regulations in force. In our country, this standard has been published with TS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems - Requirements.

Although the OHSAS 18001 standard is used internationally, it is not an ISO standard. However, as a need, the publication of the International Standards Organization came into the agenda and studies on this subject started in 2014. Finally in 2018 the ISO 45001 standard was released. This standard replaces the OHSAS 18001 standard. In our country, this standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute under the following headings: TS ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety systems - Terms and user manual.

With the publication of the ISO 45001 standard, a three-year transition period was recognized. Businesses that hold the OHSAS 18001 certificate today will continue to use it during this time. However, after the transition period, they will be re-audited and this time they will receive ISO 45001 Certificate.

The ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System standard has high-level structural features that apply to other ISO management system standards such as the ISO 9001 Quality Management System and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.

The ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System requires businesses to look beyond emergency health and safety issues and consider what society expects in a broader sense. This is a very comprehensive approach. All businesses, including suppliers, must consider the impact of their activities.

Essentially, globalization continues to rise, and businesses are expected to be ethical in all aspects, particularly in terms of employees. The ISO 45001 standard provides businesses with recognized occupational health and safety requirements in international standards. Pursuant to this standard, risks are systematically analyzed and properly managed, applied to legal regulations, safe business practices are encouraged and occupational health and safety performance is evaluated. This systematic approach provides a reduction in the number of events and ultimately makes the business more comfortable.
